SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS

I am a writer, a counselor, and a counseling psychologist in training – a scientist-practitioner with a lifelong interest in identity and multiculturalism, spirituality, wellness, doing research, and helping people.  In doing this, I hope to make myself a better person, and the world a better place.  While earning a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy and then a M.S. in Counseling and Counselor Education from Indiana University, I gained research experience in Psychology doing several research projects and presenting papers and posters at conferences.  I also attained clinical experience working with and counseling autistic adults in a behavioral residential treatment home, inmates at a juvenile correctional facility, men addicted to drugs and alcohol in a residential addictions treatment home, 7th and 8th graders at a middle school, and a variety of other individuals at a university counseling center.  While so doing, I acquired computer experience working at two IU Computer Labs for four years.  I sought out teaching experience as a Supplemental Instructor for an Intro to Computers course and as a Group Leader for a Human Sexuality and a Death and Dying course.  I received leadership experience as the President of the Honors Society and the Fine Arts Society and the Vice-President of the Psychology Club and Psi Chi.  I sang in a symphony choir, and I acted in several Shakespearean plays.  I also worked with a variety of people in different service positions: middle and high school students as a tutor and a mentor; college students as a Clerk in two IU bookstores; the general public as a McDonald’s crew worker, a Steak ‘n Shake waiter, a video store clerk, and an assistant manager in a coffee shop; and professionals and community leaders as an IU Student Ambassador and an IU Art Gallery attendant.  I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Ball State University.  While doing so, I have taught three classes for a total of six semesters, supervised Master’s students as they learn to do counseling, founded an active research team, published twice, and counseled adults in a community counseling center and an employment assistance program.  Primarily, my professional interests are in identity and multiculturalism, spirituality, human sexuality, wellness, and integrative and systemic psychotherapy.  Secondarily, I am interested in neuroscience, the Multiple Intelligences theory of Dr. Howard Gardner, and the effects of music on mood, ability, and neurochemistry.
