About Study Circles on Race ©
The Study Circles on Race is a nationwide collection of study circles -- groups that get together and talk about issues of race and ethnicity for at least five sessions. It is like a counseling group, but dialogue, not therapy, is the goal. Each group uses a resource book called Facing the Challenge of Racism and Race Relations, a publication of the Study Circles Resource Center (SCRC). SCRC is a project of the Topsfield Foundation, Inc., a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan foundation which is dedicated to advancing deliberative democracy and improving the quality of public life in the United States. At the end of each Study Circle, each group comes up with a community action project to make a difference in the community and to continue to promote dialogue on issues of race and ethnicity. In the Fall of 2003, a Study Circle convened in Muncie, Indiana, sponsored locally by Christian Ministries of Delaware County, a non-denominational, religiously affiliated community service group similar to the Salvation Army. As their community action project, this study circle founded Unity in DiverCity. For more information about Study Circles, see www.studycircles.org. The Study Circles on Race publishes an excellent handbook. The success of their efforts has inspired the DiverCity Group to assemble a handbook of our own.
