Clinical Experience

 

May Institute, Plymouth Center for Adult Services -- Program Specialist I

        Duration:  May through August 1998

        Type of Experience:  Daily living care and behavioral treatment programs of persons with mental retardation

        Client Populations:  Two men with autism, in their twenties

        Clinical Supervisor:  Tom Clifford, House Manager

        Description:  The May Institute is an organization that provides residential living and treatment programs for moderately to severely mentally retarded individuals in Massachusetts.  The Plymouth Center (or "Plymouth House") was the home of two men in their twenties, both with severe mental retardation and autism, and both exhibited self-injurious behavior.  The Program Specialists who worked at the Center provided daily living care for these two clients, and enacted their behavioral treatment programs.  Treatment was purely behavioral; neither was on any medication save allergy medicine.  This was my first clinical experience, and not only did I learn much about mental retardation and autism, I also had the chance to see autism unaltered by medication.

 

Plainfield Juvenile Correctional Facility -- Psychology Intern

        Duration:  May through August 2001

        Type of Experience:  Individual and group counseling in a juvenile correctional facility of adolescents convicted for sex offenses or anger-related crimes

        Client Populations:  14- to 18-year-old incarcerated boys

        Clinical Supervisor:  Dr. Robert Craig, Ph.D., Staff Psychologist

        Description:  The Plainfield Juvenile Correctional Facility (formerly Indiana Boys School) was one of several state facilities in Indiana incarcerating juveniles.  Separate from the adult prison system, students (as inmates are called) have typically been sentenced for three to six months for various offenses.  As a counselor intern, I provided individual counseling to nine students and helped facilitate groups for sex offenses and anger management.  The anger management groups utilized a variety of traditional anger management techniques, while the sex offense group used a ten-step approach to dealing with sexual offenses similar to the 12-Step approach used in Alcoholics Anonymous.  The facility itself operated predominantly from the Reality Therapy model.

 

Center for Human Growth -- Counselor Intern

        Duration:  August 2001 to August 2002

        Type of Experience:  Providing individual and group counseling at a low cost to the local community

        Client Populations:  Children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families in the greater Monroe County area; international students at Indiana University; families referred from the Monroe County Juvenile court; 7th and 8th graders at Batchelor Middle School

        Clinical Supervisors:  Alyson Mease, M.S.; Lynn Gilman, M.S.

        Description:  The Center for Human Growth is a full service counseling center at Indiana University offering individual, couple, and family counseling and personal growth groups to clients at the lowest possible cost.  The CHG is staffed by Masters- and doctoral-level counseling students practicing from a variety of empirically-validated theoretical orientations, including Functional Family Therapy, under the direction of Dr. Thomas Sexton, Ph.D.  The Center also conducts several outreach projects in the Monroe County community:

            The Indiana Family Project:  The CHG provides Functional Family Therapy for families and adolescents referred by the court system through a partnership with the Monroe County Juvenile Court.

            The Office of Family and Child Services Project:  The CHG provides Functional Family Therapy for families referred or mandated to counseling by the Office of Family and Child Services.

            The Adult Probation Project:  The CHG provides Functional Family Therapy for adults referred or mandated to counseling by the Monroe County adult probation office.

            COASIS:  Through the Cultural Orientation And Support for International Students program, the CHG provides counseling and educational services for international students at Indiana University Bloomington, including psychoeducational group counseling.

            Batchelor Student Assistance Program:  The CHG also provides individual counseling and conducts psychoeducational groups for 7th and 8th grade boys and girls through the Student Assistance Program at Batchelor Middle School.

        In my year at the CHG, I staffed the Center, performed intake interviews as necessary, provided weekly counseling to a variety of individuals, and provided individual and group counseling through the Batchelor Student Assistance Program.  I also participated in several other outreach activities, such as training Resident Assistants in crisis intervention, guest-lecturing to IU classes on stress, co-presenting an educational talk called "Blocking Burnout" at a leadership conference, answering phones on behalf of the CHG for a local public television fund drive, and participating in a number of screening days such as National Depression Screening Day, National Anxiety Screening Day, and National Eating Disorders Screening Day.

 

Batchelor Middle School -- Counselor Intern

        Duration:  January to May 2002

        Type of Experience:  Providing individual and group counseling at a low cost to middle school boys at Batchelor Middle School

        Client Populations:  7th and 8th graders at Batchelor Middle School

        Clinical Supervisors:  Alyson Mease, M.S.; Lynn Gilman, M.S.

        Description:  The Center for Human Growth (CHG) provides individual counseling and conducts psychoeducational groups for 7th and 8th grade boys and girls through the Student Assistance Program at Batchelor Middle School.  In my year at the CHG, I provided individual and group counseling through the Batchelor Student Assistance Program.

 

 

Amethyst House -- Counselor Intern

        Duration:  May through July 2002

        Type of Experience:  Residential drug and alcohol addictions counseling

        Client Populations:  Adult men and women addicted to drugs and/or alcohol

        Clinical Supervisor:  Linda Calloway, M.S., R.N.

        Description:  The Amethyst House provides treatment to those with a drug or alcohol addiction, servicing not only individuals from the Monroe County area, but from beyond as well.  In addition to providing residential inpatient treatment programs in separate houses for men and women in Bloomington, Amethyst House also provides a Semi-Independent Living Program for graduates of its men’s residential program, as well as outpatient services in both Bloomington and Evansville, Indiana.  According to the Amethyst House website, in 2001, Amethyst House “provided residents 4756 days in a safe and supportive environment,” and “more than half of Amethyst House residents leave [their] houses earning a living wage and having support in the community.”  For a short three months, I was a staff counselor at the Men's Amethyst House of Bloomington, Indiana.  I provided individual counseling, co-facilitated a Relapse Prevention group, did case management, attended staff and house meetings, staffed the House, and dispensed medication for the residents of the Men's House.

 

Ball State University Counseling Practicum Clinic -- Clinic Staff

        Duration:  August 2002 to August 2003

        Type of Experience:  Conducting phone screenings and intakes with individuals and families in the local community at a low cost

        Client Populations:  Children, adolescents, adults, and families in the greater Delaware County area

        Clinical Supervisor:  Dr. Theresa Kruczek, Ph.D.

        Description:  The Ball State University Counseling Practicum Clinic provides low-cost individual and family counseling to people in the Delaware County area.  Housed in the Ball State University Teacher's College, the BSU Counseling Clinic is staffed by Masters- and doctoral-level counseling students at Ball State, who provide services from a variety of empirically-validated, process-oriented theoretical orientations.  My duties as a Staff Counselor included provided weekly counseling to individuals, staffing the Clinic, and conducting regular intake appointments.

        Description:  The Ball State University Counseling Practicum Clinic provides low-cost individual and family counseling to people in the Delaware County area.  Housed in the Ball State University Teacher's College, the BSU Counseling Clinic is staffed by Masters- and doctoral-level counseling students at Ball State, who provide services from a variety of empirically-validated, process-oriented theoretical orientations.  My duties as a Staff Counselor included provided weekly counseling to individuals, staffing the Clinic, and conducting regular intake appointments.

 

Ball State University Counseling Center -- Stress Outreach Team -- Outreach Counselor

        Duration:  August 2003 to present

        Type of Experience:  Conducting periodic outreach presentations on stress management

        Client Populations:  Ball State University students

        Clinical Supervisor:  Dr. Kim Gorman, Ph.D.

        Description:  The Ball State University Counseling Center provides free counseling for students enrolled at Ball State University, and for their families.  The Stress Outreach Team is staffed by Masters- and doctoral-level counselors, who conduct several outreach presentations on stress management per semester.  These presentations include guest-teaching classes, conducting groups in dormitories, and setting up tables or booths in public areas to disseminate information and promote awareness of the causes and effects of stress, and of techniques for preventing and reducing stress.  My duties as an Outreach Counselor were to meet weekly with the outreach team, and to conduct periodic outreach presentations.

 

Midwest Health Strategies/Cardinal Health Systems -- Employee Assistance Program -- EAP Counselor

        Duration:  August 2004 to present

        Type of Experience:  Providing individual and family counseling at a low cost to employees of Cardinal Health Systems and its partners

        Client Populations:  Adult employees, their families, and/or individual family members in the greater Delaware County area

        Clinical Supervisor:  Dr. Robert Hayes, Ph.D., Carol Nicholson, MA

        Description:  Midwest Health Strategies has an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which Cardinal Health Systems and many of its partner employers offer as part of their employees' benefits packages.  For no charge to the employee, employees and/or their family members can receive PRN ("as needed") counseling for a variety of work-related issues or personal concerns.  This counseling is time-limited, usually to 8-10 sessions per year, though the average number of sessions used by employees was between 3.4 and 3.6.  My duties as an EAP counselor were to see clients as needed on two evenings per week, and to take home with me an emergency on-call phone for one weekend per month.
